GREC – Group of Climate Studies

History

In early 1997 a group of graduate and undergraduate students who were working under the supervision of Prof. Tercio Ambrizzi on scientific studies related to the area of climatology felt the need to discuss the climate variability on a more regular basis in order to improve their knowledge on this topic. It was decided to prepare a monthly climate report where information from various national and international institutes were summarized and written in a clearer, easily digestible format and sent by email to anyone who might be interested, starting with colleagues and professors of our own department (DCA-IAG-USP).

Some years later, GrEC (Group of Climate Studies) began holding regular meetings to discuss the climate, with undergraduate and graduate students as participants. The research projects developed by each member are related to studies of some climate components, the use of global climate models, multivariate statistical techniques for data analysis, and automated schemes for the tracking of cyclones and anticyclones. Our group also conducts downscaling studies, which use high-resolution models for regional climate studies. Thus, the climate variability at various temporal and spatial scales is the focus of our group.

In summary, year after year, our group has been developing and striving to answer the complex questions related to the Earth's climate and in particular the climate of Brazil. We have always acquired the best statistical and modeling tools, in addition to focusing our research to achieve this goal. We are certain that our contribution can become significant to the progress of science.
